Short answer

ClickFunnels increases sales by raising revenue per visitor rather than bringing traffic: order bumps on the checkout, one-click upsells after purchase, split tests, follow-up email and payment retries. Plans start at $97 a month (Launch) or $970 a year, with a 14-day free trial followed by a 30-day money-back guarantee. It pays off when you have your own product and steady traffic.

Key takeaways

  • ClickFunnels works on conversion rate, average order value and follow-up; it doesn't create traffic, so a funnel with few visitors gains little.
  • In an example with 1,000 visitors, a $17 order bump and a $97 upsell lift revenue from $740 to $1,036, about 40% more from the same traffic.
  • Launch costs $97/mo or $970/yr, Scale $197/mo and Optimize $297/mo; your own affiliate program (Affiliate Center) needs Optimize.
  • The 14-day trial is followed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so the risk-free test window is up to 44 days.
  • The ClickFunnels affiliate program pays 30% recurring with a 45-day sticky cookie, a 45-day payment delay and a $100 minimum payout.

ClickFunnels can increase your sales, but not in the way the hype suggests. It doesn't create buyers out of thin air. What it does well is squeeze more money out of every buyer you already get: an order bump on the checkout, a one-click upsell after the purchase, a follow-up email for the people who left, and a split test that tells you which page earns more. If your traffic is weak or your offer is wrong, no funnel builder will save it.

I've used ClickFunnels for my own funnel experiments, and I've also seen plenty of people pay for it for months while their funnels sat half-built. So this guide is the practical version: which funnel type fits what you sell, which ClickFunnels 2.0 features actually move the numbers, what the plans really cost, a trial trick most people miss, an honest comparison with cheaper tools, and how the ClickFunnels affiliate program works if you'd rather earn by recommending it.

Two related guides cover the ground around this one. If you promote other people's products, the stage-by-stage plan is in affiliate marketing funnels. If your problem is a single page that doesn't convert, read how to build a high conversion rate landing page. Here we focus on the tool and the money it can add after the first "yes".

How does ClickFunnels actually increase sales?

ClickFunnels increases sales by raising the revenue you get per visitor, not the number of visitors. Every online sale is a simple chain: visitors × conversion rate × average order value × repeat purchases. A funnel builder works on the last three links; traffic is still your job.

That sounds like a small distinction, but it's the reason some people love the tool and others call it a waste of $97. If you send 50 visitors a month, a perfect upsell adds pennies. If you already sell something and have steady traffic, the same upsell can add a big slice of revenue without a single extra ad dollar.

A next product to sell, a reason to come back

Courses, memberships, email broadcasts

Here's a quick example to show why average order value matters so much. These are example numbers, not a benchmark. Say 1,000 people reach your sales page, 2% buy a $37 product, and that's 20 buyers and $740. Now add a $17 order bump that 30% of buyers tick (6 people, $102) and a $97 one-click upsell that 10% accept (2 people, $194). Revenue becomes $1,036, about 40% more from the same traffic. Revenue per visitor goes from $0.74 to roughly $1.04, which also means you can afford to pay more for each click than a competitor who sells only the front-end product.

Which funnel type fits what you sell?

Pick the funnel type by price and by how much trust the buyer needs. Cheap, simple products can be sold in one or two steps; expensive or unfamiliar ones need education first, usually through email, a webinar or a call. Using the wrong shape is the most common reason a "proven template" fails.

Funnel type

Best for

How it makes money

Typical steps

Lead magnet funnel

Almost everyone; the base of everything else

Builds an email list you sell to later

Opt-in page → thank-you page → email sequence

Tripwire (low-ticket) funnel

Info products, templates, mini-courses

Small first sale, profit from bumps and upsells

Sales page → checkout with order bump → upsell → downsell

Book funnel

Authors, experts, coaches

A cheap or "free plus shipping" book leads to bigger offers

Book offer → checkout → audiobook or course upsell

Webinar funnel

Courses and coaching from about $200 up

Teaches first, sells at the end of the presentation

Registration → confirmation → replay → order page

VSL funnel

Single offers sold to cold traffic

A video sales letter does the selling

Video page → checkout → upsells

Application funnel

High-ticket coaching, services, done-for-you work

Filters leads, then sells on a call

Video or long page → application form → booking calendar

My rule of thumb: start with a lead magnet funnel no matter what, because an email list is the one asset that keeps selling after the ad budget runs out. Then add the sales funnel that matches your price. If you sell something under $50, a tripwire funnel with a bump and an upsell is usually the fastest way to see whether ClickFunnels pays for itself. If you sell coaching or services, an application funnel with a booking calendar (ClickFunnels has appointments on every plan) beats a "Buy now" button every time. For the big-ticket side, see high-ticket affiliate offers.

The ClickFunnels 2.0 features that move the numbers

Four features do most of the money-making work in ClickFunnels 2.0: order bumps, one-click upsells, split tests and the payments layer. The rest (websites, blog, courses, email) is useful, but it's what you'd get from cheaper tools too.

Order bumps on the Smart Checkout

An order bump is a small extra offer with a checkbox right on the order form: "Add the swipe file for $17". ClickFunnels builds it into the Smart Checkout element; you assign a product as the bump and style the box to match your page. It works because the buyer has already decided to pay, the card is out, and saying yes takes one click.

What usually goes wrong: the bump is either unrelated ("buy my other course too") or too expensive. A good bump is a shortcut to the result the buyer just paid for, priced well below the main product. Templates, checklists, a done-for-you version of one step, or a recording of a workshop all work well.

One-click upsells and downsells

A one-click upsell (ClickFunnels calls the page an OTO, "one-time offer") appears right after the purchase. Because the buyer has already paid on the previous step, the upsell button processes the order without asking for card details again. If they decline, the original order goes through as normal, and you can send them to a downsell: a cheaper or lighter version of the same offer.

One technical catch: one-click upsells need a configured Payments AI account, which is ClickFunnels' payment layer. Set that up on day one of your trial, not on the day you launch. The classic mistake is building a beautiful funnel and finding out at the end that payments aren't connected, so every "one-click" button opens a full checkout form and kills the point.

Split tests

ClickFunnels lets you split test any funnel step: you duplicate a page (or create a new one), and the traffic is divided between the original and the variant, 50/50 by default, with a slider to change it. Each step can have only one variant at a time, so you test one idea against one idea. ClickFunnels' own help center suggests running a test for at least 30 days.

Two settings people miss. First, if you test the first page of a funnel, share the funnel's root URL, not the page URL, or all your traffic lands on one version and the test is meaningless. Second, turn on analytics in the editor so page views, opt-ins, orders and sales show on each page thumbnail. With small traffic, test big things: the offer, the price, the headline angle. Button colours can wait until you have thousands of visitors; the sample-size math is in the landing page guide.

Payments AI: more than "connect Stripe"

Payments AI is ClickFunnels' multi-gateway payment system. It supports its own gateway plus Stripe, PayPal, NMI, Coinbase and Klarna, although Coinbase and Klarna don't currently work with the ClickFunnels Checkout element. It also handles routing between processors and dunning, which means automatically retrying failed subscription payments and reminding customers to update their card.

Dunning sounds boring, and that's exactly why it's underrated. If you sell a membership or a payment plan, expired cards quietly eat recurring revenue every month. Recovering even a few of those payments is money you already earned, with no new marketing at all.

Everything else in the box

Every plan also includes email marketing, a contact database (a basic CRM), courses, appointments and unlimited visitors. That's the real selling point for many people: one login instead of five tools that need to talk to each other. Whether that's worth the price depends on what you'd pay for the separate tools, which we'll get to in the comparison below.

Checkout: where most sales quietly die

Most people who start a checkout never finish it. The Baymard Institute's cart abandonment research, an average of 50 studies, puts the documented abandonment rate at about 70%. Among US shoppers, the top reasons are extra costs that show up late (about four in ten), a slow or complicated checkout, being forced to create an account and not trusting the site with a card.

Baymard's numbers come mostly from online stores, but the lessons transfer straight to a ClickFunnels order page:

  • Show the full price before the form. Taxes, shipping and payment-plan totals belong on the page, not as a surprise at the last step.
  • Ask only for what you need. No forced account creation, no "how did you hear about us" field. Every extra field is one more reason to close the tab.
  • Capture the email first. If the order page asks for the email before the card details, you can follow up with people who leave. A short "Did something go wrong?" email to abandoned checkouts is one of the highest-earning emails in any funnel.
  • Put trust where the fear is. The guarantee, accepted payment logos and one short testimonial go next to the "Pay" button, because that's where hesitation happens.
  • Check it on a phone. Fill out your own checkout on a mobile connection before you send a single paid click.

For the page itself, the copy and the proof, how to create money pages that convert goes deeper.

ClickFunnels plans and what you really pay

ClickFunnels has three main plans: Launch at $97 a month, Scale at $197 and Optimize at $297, plus an annual-only Dominate plan for large teams. Annual billing costs ten times the monthly price, so you get two months free. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial.

All plans list unlimited funnels (ClickFunnels marks this as a limited-time offer) and unlimited visitors. On top of the plan price there are metered extras: for example $0.675 per 1,000 emails sent and $0.10 per video, but emails sent through your own SMTP server and videos hosted elsewhere aren't charged.

Which plan do you actually need? For a solo seller with one product, Launch covers it. Scale makes sense when you need countdown funnels for real deadline offers, webhooks to connect other tools, or several brands in separate workspaces. Optimize is mainly about the Affiliate Center: if you want other people to promote your product for a commission, that's the plan with the built-in tool for it.

The annual math, for the record: Launch costs $1,164 a year paid monthly, or $970 paid annually, a $194 saving, about $81 a month. Scale saves $394 a year and Optimize $594. But don't buy the annual plan to save money on a tool you haven't proven yet. Pay monthly until a funnel is making money, then switch.

The trial trick: you have 44 days, not 14

The ClickFunnels trial is 14 days, but the real risk-free window is longer. ClickFunnels offers a 30-day money-back guarantee that starts when the trial ends, so you can test the tool for up to 44 days and cancel within that window without penalties or fees. Most people treat day 14 as the deadline and either rush or cancel in a panic. Use the full window instead.

Here's how I'd plan those 44 days:

  1. Days 1–3: plumbing. Connect Payments AI, your domain and email sending. Create your products and the bump and upsell products. Boring, but it's exactly what breaks on launch day if you leave it.
  2. Days 4–10: one funnel, not five. Build the single funnel that matches your price (see the table above). Copy first, design second.
  3. Days 11–14: first traffic. Send real visitors before the trial ends, even a small budget or your own email list. A funnel with zero visitors tells you nothing about whether the tool is worth $97.
  4. Days 15–44: real data, refundable money. Your first payment is now inside the guarantee. Run a split test, add the abandoned-checkout email, watch the bump and upsell take rates. By day 40 you have a month of numbers to decide on.

Two more rules work in your favour. You can change plans at any time, even during the trial, so start on Launch and upgrade only when you actually hit a Scale feature you need. And if your sales come in seasons, say a course you launch twice a year, ClickFunnels has a Pause plan at $17 a month that keeps your funnels, courses and integrations stored until you come back. Your funnels go offline while paused, so it's for the quiet months, not for running a live funnel cheaply.

The $97 fear (and the opposite trap)

Two traps stop people from making money with ClickFunnels, and they pull in opposite directions. The first is fear of the monthly fee, so you never start. The second is sunk cost: you've paid for three months, so you keep paying for a fourth instead of admitting the funnel isn't working.

The fear is mostly loss aversion: losing $97 feels worse than earning $97 feels good. The cure is to turn the fee into a concrete target. In the example earlier, the bump and upsell added $296 for every 1,000 visitors. At those example rates, about 330 visitors a month through the funnel cover the $97 Launch fee on bumps and upsells alone. Or think of it as front-end sales: with a $37 product, three extra sales a month pay for the tool. If you can't see where those three sales come from, the problem isn't the tool, it's traffic or the offer, and you should fix that first.

The sunk-cost trap is sneakier because the money is already spent, so cancelling feels like admitting a loss. It isn't: the past months are gone either way, and only next month's $97 is still a choice. That's why the kill rule from the trial section matters. Decide the numbers while you're calm, then follow them. If the numbers say "not yet", the $17 Pause plan or a full export and a cheaper tool are both perfectly respectable answers.

Put your own numbers into the campaign ROI calculator and include the ClickFunnels fee as a cost. A funnel that looks profitable before tools and breaks even after them is a hobby, not a business.

ClickFunnels vs cheaper alternatives: an honest comparison

ClickFunnels is not the cheapest way to build a funnel, and for many beginners it isn't the best first choice. You pay for having pages, checkout, upsells, email and courses in one polished system. If you'd rather spend less money and more setup time, there are good alternatives.

So when is ClickFunnels worth it? In my view, when three things are true: you have your own product (or several), you already have some traffic or a budget to buy it, and your time is worth more than the difference in price. Launch costs $80 a month more than the Systeme.io Startup plan, $960 a year. If ClickFunnels' checkout and upsell flow earns you more than that, or saves you more than that in hours, it pays. If you're still looking for your first sale, start cheaper and come back when you have something to optimise.

The case where ClickFunnels is clearly the wrong tool: you're a pure affiliate with no product of your own and no list yet. Then you mostly need a bridge page and an email sequence, and a cheaper stack does that fine. The funnel itself is covered in affiliate marketing funnels.

One more honest note: if you're mainly selling a course rather than funnels, a dedicated course platform may fit better; I compared them in platforms to sell online courses.

Can affiliates use ClickFunnels to sell more?

Yes, but the gain comes from email, not from upsells, because you can't add a one-click upsell to someone else's checkout. As an affiliate you use ClickFunnels for the parts you control: the opt-in page, a bridge page that warms people up, and the email sequence that sends them to the offer over several days.

Where it does help: you can combine your own small product with affiliate offers. Sell a $17 guide or template pack, and put relevant affiliate recommendations inside it and in the follow-up emails. The small purchase turns readers into buyers (in my experience, someone who has paid you once is much easier to sell to again), and the affiliate commissions become your "upsell". It's a neat way to cover ad costs with the front-end sale and keep the commissions as profit.

Before you send email traffic to an affiliate offer, check two things: that your email setup allows affiliate links, and that the affiliate program allows email as a traffic source. Both are easy to miss and both can cost you commissions. The email side, including what to send and how often, is in email marketing as your personal ATM.

The ClickFunnels affiliate program: what affiliates actually earn

The ClickFunnels affiliate program pays 30% recurring commission on the plans you refer, with a 45-day cookie. You don't need to be a customer to join: current users are enrolled automatically, and non-users fill out a registration form. Here are the terms that matter for planning:

Term

What it is

Commission

30% for standard affiliates (Certified Funnel Builder affiliates earn 20%); some offers aren't commissionable

Cookie

45 days, "sticky": if the person comes back within that time and buys, you get credit even through a different link

Payment delay

Commissions are paid after 45 days, to cover refunds and trials

Payout days

1st and 15th of each month, through Tipalti

Minimum payout

$100

Payout methods

ACH, PayPal, paper check and other options in Tipalti

Paperwork

Tax form (W-9 in the US, W-8BEN for international affiliates) and a verification call with the affiliate manager after your first commission

The math, as an example: one Launch customer on monthly billing earns you 30% of $97, which is $29.10 a month for as long as they stay. Ten such customers bring $291 a month. A customer on the annual plan earns you $291 at once, 30% of $970. Note the $100 minimum: three monthly referrals give $87.30, so it takes four (or one annual sign-up) before your first payout goes out. Model your own numbers with the earnings calculator.

A few things I'd keep in mind when promoting it:

  • The cookie outlasts the trial. Someone who clicks your link, starts the 14-day trial and converts to paid is well inside the 45-day window. Promote the trial, not the price: "try it for 14 days" is an easier yes than "$97 a month".
  • Your audience must sell something. ClickFunnels is for people with a product, a service or a coaching offer. Recommending it to someone looking for their first $100 online is a fast way to get refunds and lose trust.
  • Bonuses beat banners. The help center itself suggests offering bonuses to your audience. A funnel template you built, a short setup checklist or a recorded walkthrough of your own funnel gives people a reason to buy through your link rather than someone else's.
  • Talk to the affiliate manager. You'll have a verification call after your first commission anyway, so use it. Affiliate managers see what converts across the whole program right now: which offers, which angles, which traffic sources. Ask, and ask again once your numbers are steady.
  • Read the terms before buying ads. Many software programs restrict bidding on their brand name in search ads; check the ClickFunnels affiliate terms before you spend a cent on paid traffic.

And disclose. If you earn a commission from a recommendation, say so clearly, next to the recommendation. The FTC's Disclosures 101 guide notes that a disclosure only on an "About me" or profile page is likely to be missed; similar rules exist in the UK, the EU, Canada and Australia.

Mistakes that kill ClickFunnels sales

Most failed ClickFunnels funnels fail for the same handful of reasons, and almost none of them are about the software.

  • Building before having traffic. A funnel is a multiplier. Zero visitors times a great upsell is still zero. Have a traffic plan, paid or organic, before the trial starts. The options are in best paid traffic sources.
  • Copying a template's shape, not its logic. A webinar funnel for a $27 ebook is overkill; a one-page checkout for $2,000 coaching is underkill. Match the funnel to the price.
  • Five upsells in a row. One bump and one or two upsells is plenty. Every extra step after the purchase annoys a buyer who just trusted you with their card, and annoyed buyers ask for refunds.
  • Testing tiny things. With a few hundred visitors a month, a button colour test will never reach a clear result. Test the offer, the price or the headline.
  • Ignoring the email side. Most people don't buy on the first visit. If you don't follow up with abandoned checkouts and new subscribers, you're paying for a funnel and using half of it.
  • Forgetting the full cost. Add the plan, metered email and video, payment fees and ad spend before you call a funnel profitable.
  • Promising the impossible. Funnel pages tempt people into income claims and fake scarcity. A countdown that resets for every visitor is a lie your buyers will spot. Follow the platforms' rules and the laws of the countries your ads target.

Where to start

If you have a product and some traffic, start the ClickFunnels trial with a written plan: one funnel matched to your price, Payments AI connected on day one, real visitors before day 14, a kill rule for day 40. Use the bump, one upsell and an abandoned-checkout email; those three are where most of the extra money comes from.

If you don't have a product or traffic yet, don't pay for any funnel builder this month. Build the lead magnet and the email sequence with a free or cheap tool, get your first buyers, and come back to ClickFunnels when you have something worth optimising. The tool will still be there; your $97 a month will stay in your pocket until it can earn its keep.

And if you're an affiliate with an audience of marketers, coaches or course creators, the ClickFunnels affiliate program is one of the more generous recurring offers in the space. Build a funnel, show it honestly, and let the 45-day cookie do its work. I share what's working in funnels and affiliate programs on Telegram at @affiliatepath, if you want to follow along.

FAQ

Is ClickFunnels worth it for beginners?

Usually not as a first tool. ClickFunnels pays off when you have your own product and some traffic, because its strengths are checkout, upsells and testing. If you're still looking for your first sale, a free or cheap tool such as Systeme.io's free plan or an email service with a landing page is enough to start.

How much does ClickFunnels cost?

Launch costs $97 a month or $970 a year, Scale $197 a month or $1,970 a year, and Optimize $297 a month or $2,970 a year. There's also an annual-only Dominate plan. Metered extras apply above plan limits, for example $0.675 per 1,000 emails sent, unless you send through your own SMTP.

How long is the ClickFunnels free trial?

14 days. After the trial ends, a 30-day money-back guarantee applies, so you can cancel within up to 44 days in total without penalties or fees. You can also change plans during the trial.

What is an order bump in ClickFunnels?

An order bump is a small extra offer with a checkbox on the order form, added through the Smart Checkout element. The buyer adds it with one click while paying for the main product. It works best when it's cheap and directly related to what they're already buying.

Do one-click upsells work with any payment processor?

One-click upsells need a configured Payments AI account. Payments AI supports its own gateway plus Stripe, PayPal, NMI, Coinbase and Klarna, but Coinbase and Klarna don't currently work with the ClickFunnels Checkout element.

How much do ClickFunnels affiliates earn?

Standard affiliates earn 30% recurring commission, with a 45-day sticky cookie. Commissions are paid after a 45-day delay on the 1st and 15th of each month through Tipalti, with a $100 minimum. As an example, one Launch customer on monthly billing earns you $29.10 a month.

Can I pause ClickFunnels instead of cancelling?

Yes. The Pause plan costs $17 a month and keeps your funnels, courses and integrations stored, but your funnels are not accessible while paused. It starts at the end of your current billing cycle.

What is a cheaper alternative to ClickFunnels?

Systeme.io has a free plan with 2,000 contacts and 3 funnels and paid plans from $17 a month. HighLevel starts at $97 a month and suits agencies. FunnelKit runs funnels inside a WordPress and WooCommerce store on an annual licence.
